What is an Apprenticeship?
Our comprehensive training programme has been developed to provide Hairdressing NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeships and private courses and is delivered by our qualified Assessors who supervise our assistants during an extensive course, giving expert advice and guidance.
An Apprenticeship is a work based training programme that allows students to ‘Earn as you Learn’ which takes approximately two years to complete. Apprentices work alongside highly skilled and qualified staff, attend our Academy one day per week to learn and work for the rest of the week in the principle salon. An apprenticeship is an opportunity to earn a wage and whilst developing future career opportunities.
Our excellent programme places emphasis on teaching methods that incorporate that crucial hands-on approach, so apprentices gain skills in a relatively short time.
Since opening, the Academy has gone from strength to strength, quickly achieving Approved City & Guilds Training Centre Status, and seeing many young stylists successfully obtaining their NVQ qualifications.
Our Training Team
Justine
Justine has been The Academy training manager for over 15 years and has worked for the Richard John group since 1998. Her expertise is extensive and she has successfully helped many aspiring young stylists achieve their ambitions. Justine commented: “In order to secure our future we knew we had to train our own stylists, offering our clients a more accessible service, whilst creating a more comprehensive learning experience for our apprentices.”
Michele
Michele started her hairdressing career as an Apprentice in a Brighton Salon. After completing her NVQ level 3 at Lewes college, she went on to teach there part time alongside managing a salon in Crawley. Michele went on to owning her own salon in Brighton and gaining her Assessor & Verifier awards. Michele has worked throughout Sussex with apprentice’s and their employers, been responsible for health & safety of salons and assessing Level 2 and Level 3 students with Sussex Downs College, before joining The Academy team in January 2020. Michele says, ‘I love working with Apprentices and seeing them progress with Skills & confidence.’

Don’t forget, if our training courses do not fit into your own busy life you can make an appointment with one of our Graduate Stylists in our main salon. Our Graduates, who have finished their training and now work full time in the salon, offer great value for money and our inimitable personal service.

At Richard John we have been providing hairdressing training for over 35 years, during which time we have trained hundreds of young people and create a new generation of exceptional stylists. In 2005, Richard John realised his dream of opening a dedicated academy to train the stylists of the future and to instill in them the ethos by which Richard John Hair Salon abides: to provide inspirational and creative styling, with an unparalleled degree of customer service, within a professional team. In doing so it allows our young stylists to build their careers within a strong support network – our ‘family’ – to be the very best and – to have fun doing it! We strongly believe that excellence can only be achieved through strong foundations and a commitment to your craft.
The Academy is a purpose built, independently run training salon, dedicated to providing the best possible hairdressing education and offers hairdressing appointments every day, to ensure all apprentices and students receive maximum hands on hairdressing training experience. The salon is situated just outside Worthing town centre and has easy access to local bus, trains and car parking.
